I understand that it's meant to be written in a casual tone, the celebrity reviews on the back say it's like talking to "your best friend" rather than a self-help book.. but it's SO scattered. If it were marketed as a personal memoir with encouraging messages I think I would have been more prepared. It's best for high school, maybe college students. Even as a college student I don't think I would have connected with her just because of different experiences. As a grown woman, it feels self centered and patronizing. I'm over halfway through and keep thinking I'll find the hidden treasure everyone since everyone seems to love this book. Will update if I find it! I would definitely recommend this book for females in high school or college. I say this as 33 year old college educated working professional who has held steady employment since I was 16. Many of the stories and advice definitely has the tone of a teacher or parent talking to a younger person who has yet to have had real life experiences. I also found the author to be repetitive, lengthy, and overly anecdotal. The fact that she goes into so much detail and explanations from her own personal stories, the majority of the book read more like an autobiography. The book also includes personal stories of other successful women but again, some of them rambled and only a few of the stories were inspiring or relatable for me. Chapter 8 was the only part in the entire book where I felt motivated and uplifted and that's basically the final chapter. That being said I would have appreciated this book as a younger woman just starting out on my own in the workforce.
